Analysis service: pb when archiving/restoring from 1 machine to another

I have to install cubes on another machine (not on the same site/NT domain).
I have archived the OLAP db and generated a .cab file.

I have retored on the destination server.
It works fine in Analysis Manager console (I can process and lokk at the data).
But when I want to access the cube from Excel using OLAP cube, I have an error msg.

Is there something I need to do on the distination server ?
Langage, SP, role, version of SQLServer/Analysis services ...

ThanksWhat is the error message that you get?|||In Excel: (translated from French)
"OLAP cube not found
OLAP database ha been modified or you do not have necessary authorisation to connect to the cube
Contact your database admin"

It has something to do wuth SSPI authentication ?|||It could have something to do with the access rights...
I once saw something similar to this, and then the problem was solved by adding the user account to the OLAP admin group.

Analysis Service: how can I process cubes?

how can I process and update cubes automaticly every night ?
ThanksThere is a task in DTS for processign cubes and other Analysis Services tasks. Create a package and just schedule it

Analysis Service: filter fact table ?

I have a big table with several types of transsactions: PO (Puchase Orders, SO,( Sales orders), INV (Invoices) ...
I want to create cubes with only one type of transactions (1 cube for PO,...)
Where and how can I filter the rows I want to use in my cube ?

Analysis Server 2000 memory vs. SQL Server 2000 memory

Here is the situation:
Server is installed with both Analysis Services(OLAP
Cubes) and SQL Server 2000. O/S is Windows Advanced
Server 2000. Server currently has 6 GB of RAM. AWE
extension is used with 5 GB of RAM allocated to SQL
Server.
Does this mean only 1 GB of RAM is left for Analysis
Services and O/S? What is the max RAM can be allocated to
Analysis Services in a Windows 2000 Advanced Server?
Need to understand why at times (once a month) we
encounter "running low on virtual memory" on this server
causing DTS packages to stall occasionally. Realize that
best practice is to separate OLAP server from SQL Server,
but budget is a limitation at this time.Steven,
Analysis Services 32-bit edition uses up to 2GB memory. It can be exapanded
up to 3GB (check the article at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295443 how to do
it). So in your case, AS and SQL are competing for the same memory. Maybe
you could limit SQL Server on 4GB, so you have 2GB for AS.

Thanks for your response. Just want to clarify....
Is AS and SQL competing for the memory OR AS only has up
to 1 GB of RAM to use since AWE is enabled with 5 GB
allocated to SQL in this case?
How about the option to add 2 GB of RAM to server, and
allocate 6 GB to SQL and leave 2 GB to AS? What do you
think?
Thanks in advance.

This would be even better than limiting SQL Server :-)

Analysis Server - Incompatible repository

Hi,
We have been using MS Analysis Server with Axapta (a mid-range ERP from MS)
for quite some time. So long we were able to create/run cubes without any
problem.
But today all of a sudden we are getting the following error message -
...................................... .........
Error
Transferring cube(s)\<CUBE NAME>\Connecting to the OLAP ServerMethod
'Connect' in COM object of class '{B492C386-0195-11D2-89BA-00C04FB9898D}'
returned error code 0x80040034 (<unknown>) which means: Incompatible
repository.
...................................... .........
The thing is nothing has changed from Axapta end. So my query is this -
Is there anything on AS that could cause such error message? Can someone
let me know please.

Hello,
To isolate the issue, you may try to check if the issue occurs on different
clients or you could use MDX sample application on server to test.
If it is client side issue, please refer to the following article to
troubleshoot the issue:
288890 PRB: Incompatible Repository Error Message Occurs After Installation
of
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=288890
If the issue persists, you may try to unregister the DSO dll's in the
following order:
msmddo80.dll
msmddo.dll
msmdlock.dll
msmdnet.dll
msmdint.dll
Then register the above Dll's in the reverse order, starting with
msmdint.dll.
If we confirm it is a server side issue, it is more like a database
corruption, you may try to archive the current database, and then restore a
known good one on AS server to test.

analysis serices, cubes and access

How to get data from cubes in analyses manager to MS access using for
example ODBC ? Does existe any other posibilities to get data from cubes
directly to the accees ?
thanks
KrisHow did you get them in cube format to begin with? If you mean transfer
the data from the underlying warehouse in SQL to Access you can use DTS.
The example that ships with AS (foodmart) is actually in Access, so you
can build cubes from data within Access. If this doesn't answer your
question, please elaborate.

Analysis Manager Remote Access

Hi,

I juste begin using Analysis Manager.

I want to know if i can create, process and manage cubes in a distant server.

I have the connection to the database on a distant server and i want to use Analysis Manager (installed on the server) from my PC (which have Anaylisi Manager Too).

I have just build a cube on my Analysis Manager with the server database but the cube does not appears on the Analysis Manager of the distant server.

Please help me, ;)

Thanks

moustachuAnalysis Services is in its second revision from Microsoft. It has a little while to go before it matures.

You can remotely administer an Analysis Services machine, but you need to have all of the datasources available on the remote machine with access to the data. Apparently the MMC application needs to get all metadata/dimension data for itself, rather than rely on the Analysis Services service to serve it up (ok, all together 5 times fast).

Good luck with it. I am hoping that AS makes many changes in the next revision.|||I thank you for your answer,

All the datasources are on the remote machine. But I do not Know How I can remotly administer an Analysis Services machine ?

Analysis Manager Error

I've been getting the following error message whenever I
try to connect to my remote server to work on some cubes.
"Cannot open connection to Analysis server 'WRPBI'

How can I fix it? I've reinstalled Analysis Manager but
it didn't help.
Thanks
Hi sacred,
You should apply SP3 for Analysis Services to the Analysis Services server.
If you are unable to upgrade the Analysis Services server to SP3, you can
also restore connectivity to the Analysis Server by replacing the
MSOLAP80.DLL,
MSOLAP80.RLL, MSMDGD80.DLL and MSMDCB80.DLL files on the client machine
with a
version equal to or less than the build number of your MSMDSRV.EXE

Analysis 2005 Cube Processing in 64-Bit Environment

I have problems with processing cubes on AS2005. I get this error message while processing:

Memory error: Allocation failure: Not enough storage is available to process this command. Error in the OLAP storage engine.

This machine has 6GB of memory and once it hits 3.5GB the processing stops. AWE is turned on.

I would appreciate, if anyone can help on this.

Thanks,

Gopal

Analysis Services is not AWE aware. So it can only use 2GB on a 32bit box (3GB if you have /3GB switch in boot.ini). Looks like the processing operation is running out of memory.

What are the number and sizes of dimension and partition tables? Do you have aggregations? Look at the processing log (in the process dialog) and find out what is the operation that causes out of memory - dimension processing, partition processing, building aggregations, etc.

This could also happen due to excessive parallelism. Try processing the dimensions and partitions individually.

|||

Thanks for your reply.

I managed to process the partitions and dimensions individually. That worked.

Gopal

|||

Hi.

Just a short question:

Is it really true that SSAS can use only 2GB RAM on a 32bit system? The technical reference for SQL Server 2005 Standard and Enterprise states that SQL Server can use the amount of RAM supported by the operating system which is 4GB for a Server 2003 Standard edition and 32GB for a Server 2003 Enterprise edition, both on 32bit systems. Does this apply only to the SQL Server Database Engine then and not the Analysis Services Server?

Kjetil

In the 64-bit versions of Analysis Services...has this memory use limit been removed?

Analysis

We have a decision support group here and we have built many Cubes. They
used to use SSMS then moved onto using BIDS to browse cubes. Since BIDS
isn't a really good end user tool for the general users - should we be
looking at getting them up on Excel pivot tables or Reporting Services and
using a Report Model? I see the Report Model from a cube is somewhat harder
than designing your data set with BIDS.Thanks for the comment - Proclarity does rock but we are in the $25k to $35k
for that tool - whereas we own the other tools already.
The 2007 Excel is really nice with the Pivot tables.

AMO: list of cubes using a dim

Hello!

I'm trying to get a list of all cubes which are using a specific dimension with AMO. I could get a list of all cubes, then all dimensions used by each cube and check where my dimension is used but I feel there must be a more elegent solution ;-)
There is a GetReferences method in the Dimension object but I don't know how to use it, any idea or a better way to get my list ?

Other question: is there a way to automatically do a full or update process on each dim of a cube when we process this cube without having to list them all before ?

Thx!

I suggest to write the code that you mentioned: iterate over all Cubes and their CubeDimensions, checking which CubeDimension points to your Dimension. Because one Dimension can be included multiple times in a Cube (role-playing dimensions feature), you won't be able to use the cube.Dimensions.Contain(...) method (because that method is based on the ID of the CubeDimension which is not necessarily the same as the ID of the Dimension). When checking if a CubeDimension points to your Dimension, it's faster to compare the string IDs (CubeDimension.DimensionID with Dimension.ID, case insensitive compare), than to use the CubeDimension.Dimension property (because that does a lookup).

The GetReferences method will do the same iterations over all the Cubes and their CubeDimensions, plus more (so it won't be faster than your code).

AMO with VB.Net

Hi All,

I am working on a project that require me to build cubes programmatically i.e., using AMO object and VB.Net. I am trying to find a sample that builds cubes using VB.Net.

I can add further features to it based on the sample.

Can any one help me at their earliest?

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

When I tried to create a cube by exactly following the sample, always it threw an error "Could not deploy the cube".

Is there a better sample that help to create cube using AMO and dotnet? A sample that get deployed though the source is AdventureWorks only.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

When I tried to implement the steps given in the above listed website, everytime I got an error message saying "Could not create cubes". Then I copied and pasted and tried to create cubes using AdventureWorks database. Still the error continued.

Can a better sample be found which I can use to create my cubes dynamically?

An early reply will be of great help to me.

Thanks

There is great C# sample in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345091.aspx

it was very useful for me.

AMO vs. ADOMD

I use AMO to programmatically create a complete database with datasource, datasourceview, dimensions, and cubes. I also have a webservice that uses ADOMD.NET to retrieve metadata about those objects (for security purposes and also for .NET 1.1 applications). However, I notice that using ADOMD's GetSchemaDataSet only return certain metadata. For example, for a dimension, it doesn't return the DimensionID or other properties I am able to set with AMO. I want to use ADOMD.NET because it returns the metadata in XML format already. With AMO, I have to serialize the dimension object. Is there any other way to retrieve additional metadata for AMO objects?

You can use "DISCOVER_XML_METADATA" with GetSchemaDataSet (this is the discover type AMO is using to get all the metadata for objects).

<RequestType>DISCOVER_XML_METADATA</RequestType>
<Restrictions>
<RestrictionList>
<DatabaseID>DataWarehouse Project1</DatabaseID>
<DataSourceViewID>Budget 1</DataSourceViewID>
<ObjectExpansion>ObjectProperties</ObjectExpansion> // can also be ExpandFull, ExpandObject or ReferenceOnly
</RestrictionList>
</Restrictions>

|||Thanks Adrian!! That's exactly what I am looking for. I assume I can just deserialize the xml to get the AMO object back. My only concern is that AMO objects are pretty powerful and it's possible for the client to modify the cube structure. I may create my own readonly wrapper classes for each AMO object or inherit the AMO objects and override the update/process methods.|||

Yes, there is the Utils class with Serialize and Deserialize methods for this.

You will need to create wrapper classes because most of the AMO classes are sealed. But what kind of additions/changes you want for the Update and Process ? Maybe they have some flags/parameters that would help.

Here's my scenario. I am deploying a click-once application to the end-user that allows them to query the cube by choosing a measure and 2 dimensions. Then they can save their configurations back to the server so next time they can open the configuration and view/edit them. I have a webservice that the click-once app uses to retrieve metadata about the cube. I was going to have the click-once app reference Microsoft.AnalysisServices dll so I can easily deserialize the XML to actual AMO objects I can use. However, since the click-once shouldn't need a live connection to the Analysis Server or make any changes to it, I don't really want to use AMO objects at all. Kind of an overkill. I was going to just create some simple classes that will parse the XML for the properties I want. The bad part is that I will have to create a class for all the AMO objects I want to use...not hard at all but just tedious.
