Analysis Manager: Cannot connect to repository. Analysis Server: <server name>.

While trying to connect to a remote Analysis Server using Analysis Manager, I get the following error in a pop up window:

=================================================

Analysis Manager:

Cannot connect to repository.

Analysis Server: <server name>.

Error:

Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed.

Can somebody help?

Thanks,

Please try this:

- with Analysis Manager, right click on the server item (or the server name) and use "Edit Repository Connection String"

- there are 2 connection strings there: the local one (for the client running on the AS2000 server machine) and the remote one; from the error message, it seems that the remote one is improperly set

Adrian, I checked th connection string. It matches the connection string on my other machine from which I can connect without any issues. Any thoughts?

Analysis Manager Remote Access

Hi,

I juste begin using Analysis Manager.

I want to know if i can create, process and manage cubes in a distant server.

I have the connection to the database on a distant server and i want to use Analysis Manager (installed on the server) from my PC (which have Anaylisi Manager Too).

I have just build a cube on my Analysis Manager with the server database but the cube does not appears on the Analysis Manager of the distant server.

Please help me, ;)

Thanks

moustachuAnalysis Services is in its second revision from Microsoft. It has a little while to go before it matures.

You can remotely administer an Analysis Services machine, but you need to have all of the datasources available on the remote machine with access to the data. Apparently the MMC application needs to get all metadata/dimension data for itself, rather than rely on the Analysis Services service to serve it up (ok, all together 5 times fast).

Good luck with it. I am hoping that AS makes many changes in the next revision.|||I thank you for your answer,

All the datasources are on the remote machine. But I do not Know How I can remotly administer an Analysis Services machine ?

Analysis Manager Error

I've been getting the following error message whenever I
try to connect to my remote server to work on some cubes.
"Cannot open connection to Analysis server 'WRPBI'
Error in data [possible data corruption]"
How can I fix it? I've reinstalled Analysis Manager but
it didn't help.
Thanks
Hi sacred,
You should apply SP3 for Analysis Services to the Analysis Services server.
If you are unable to upgrade the Analysis Services server to SP3, you can
also restore connectivity to the Analysis Server by replacing the
MSOLAP80.DLL,
MSOLAP80.RLL, MSMDGD80.DLL and MSMDCB80.DLL files on the client machine
with a
version equal to or less than the build number of your MSMDSRV.EXE

An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

It is very appreciated if someone can help me on this problem:

I have 2 machines, connected with workgroup (not domain machine), 1 is win2003 sp1, 1 is xp.

How can I connect SSAS from XP machine with windows authentication?

Looks the Native client fix the windows authentication with local user name.

When I connect from XP, my application with following codes:

string connstr = "Provider=MSOLAP.3;Data Source=amsserver;Password=accenture;User ID=administrator;Initial Catalog=MIP2ASProject";

AdomdConnection objConnection = new AdomdConnection();

// Assign the connection string and try to

//open a connection.

objConnection.ConnectionString = connstr;

objConnection.Open();

It give me this error:

An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

First of all, you dont need the User ID and Password in the connection string if you are connecting using TCP/IP (you would use them only when connecting with HTTP using Basic auth).

Second, in order to use "Provider=MSOLAP.3" you will need to install "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider" provider from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en

Hi Edward,

Yes, I have installed oledb AS9 provider.

If you think SSAS only support windows authentication which must use inside the domain, I really couldn't understand why oledbconnection works fine with same connection string?

I am not sure about whether impersonation belong to windows authentication, but, my testing prove that oledb can connect in this way, adomd can't.

BTW, thankful if anyone can let me know how to enable SSAS's anonymous connection?

Hi,

I am using ASP.NET 2.0 application to fetch data from a SQL server 2005 using stroed proc.

Stored proc is also using one table from Linked Server (SQL 2000). Linked Server is configured to use login's current security context.

Is it intermittent or consistent?

1. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.

This looks like a consistent issue. It normally means that you need to configuration IIS account to access SQL Server. You can take a look at this link, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/247931/en-us.

2. TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

This normally is an intermittent issue. It happens when you enable connection pooling and server closes the connection for reason like connection clean up, restart, network failure, the ASP.NET( sqlclient ) use dead connection from the pool to write data and thus get the failure you see. Re-retry connection should solve the issue.

|||

Hi Nan,

Re: 1. Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.

IIS is configured properly to access data from SQL Server and it is working fine when IIS & SQL are on the same box. But the above message comes only when the stored proc tries to access data from a 2nd SQL Server (linked server which is not on the same box as IIS). Somehow it is not passing the credential to the 2nd SQL Server. 2nd SQL server is linked using login's current security context. Also ASP.NET 2 web.config file says <identity impersonate="true" />. I am using NT domain right now. Is this issue of "Double hop"?

Re: 2. TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

Is connection pooling is by default? Can we change so that it should not use it?

Thanks

Shafiq

An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Hi,

I'm running a website using MSSQL 2000. Sometimes (not always) I get this error message on the website:

A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)

I have also websites running with MySQL and those don't have this problem.
I searched google but I couldn't find usefull information on this problem.

Someone who knows what's going on here ?

All I've found untill now is that it has something to do with the server not responding within a certain time, and thus assuming the connection was closed.

I can't find how I can just let it reconnect again in stead of giving me this error message?

An error message i encountered during remote installation

Good day good people of the forum thanks for the response this is the error message i encountered "an error occured while attempting to validate the setup source files unc path. verify that you have entered a valid unc path."

What is the product you are trying to install? SQL 2000 or SQL 2005?

If you are using a mapped network drive my recommendation is to use the UNC path directly or copy the SKU to your local hard drive of your host machine and try again.

Alternative to Transactional Replication

I have a customer who has about 80 SQL 2005 servers in remote offices
with various WAN links. The distribution of the SQL servers are as
follows:
- 15 site servers (publishers) must update to a single regional server
(central subscriber), there are about 5 regional servers, each with
their own set of publishers, for a total of about 75 publishers and 5
subscribers.
- There is a single SQL server in central HQ which must get updates
from all of the regional servers, for a complete picture of all the
data from the site servers.
- The amount of updates at each site are minimal and only occur once
or twice per day. However, when the update does occur, it should be
pushed out with minimal delay to the regional server as well as the
central HQ server.
- The data at the regional and HQ locations must be available at all
times for reporting purposes. No updates will be performed at the
regional or HQ locations.
- SQL Transactional Replication in a central subscriber model has been
investigated as a possible solution, but has been eliminated as a
possibility at this time for various reasons.
What am considering is a solution similar to the following.
Create a Trigger (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/
ms189799.aspx) that automatically updates a linked server upon update
of a table or view at the site server. Each site office would have a
linked server back to the SQL server in the regional office as well as
the SQL server in the central HQ office. This would ensure that each
time the data is updated, it is automatically updated on the remote
servers as well.
Any thoughts on my solution? Will it work?
Thanks for your input.
triggers work abysmally over a network, let alone a wan.

Thanks Hilary. I'm in no way a Transact SQL guru, so please forgive
my ignorance. Here is the logic I was considering...
If a local table is updated, have a trigger that detects that update
and runs an INSERT query to update a linked table, which is on the
other side of a WAN.
So here are some more questions...
Is it the INSERT to the linked table that is abysmal? Assuming the
link is stable, is it just that it is slow or are there other issues?
I suppose any update to a linked table across a WAN is abysmal,
regardless of whether it is run by a trigger or by the application
itself, would you agree?
Does transactional replication address the performance issues of
updates over a WAN, or does it suffer from he same restraints?
What if it is just a very small transaction, say just an INSERT of a
single row that occures 2-3 times a day, do you still have
reservations about that kind of implementation over a WAN?
So given my situation, 15 sites with databases that need to update
small amounts of data 2-3 times a day to a master database (for
reporting purposes) across WAN links, what would you recommend?
And finally, are you available on a consulting basis? If so, I may
need your assistance if things get hairy.

|||Hi Dave!
Basically the insert is wrapped in a transaction when you fire a trigger.
Any update done over a network incurs network hop which will add latency to
all transactions. For example there is a replication topology called
immediate updating where precisely what you are trying to do is implemented.
For a client of mine we found that transaction latency increased from 50 ms
(average) to 150 ms average. Over a WAN you can imagine the increase in
latency.
The real problem is that if there is any network interruption the calling
transaction (which could be the trigger) will hang for up to 20 s before
giving you an access denied error message and rolling back the trigger and
the precipitating trigger action.
So, triggers over the network simply aren't scalable and seriously degrade
performance.

Thanks Hilary.
How does Transactional Replication handle latency and instability of
WAN links? What happens to the replication if a link between
Publisger and Subscriber is down for a period of time? Is
Transactional Replication recommended when Publishers and Subscribers
are on the other side of WAN links?
In my case, data needs to be updated generally with 2-3 minutes of the
original update to the Publisher. Is Transaction Replication useful
in this case, considing WAN links are in place?
Thanks again for your insight.

Alternative interfaces ?

Dear ALL,
I know if I want to connect to a remote MS SQL database I can use Enterprise
Manager directly (not much secure) or establish a vpn connection before
activating Enterprise Manager.
I'd like to know if there are Microsoft or Thirdy Party applications
(stand alone applications or via http) in order to get a connection to a
remote database without using Enterprise Manager.

there are quite a lot of alternatives to EM. Although most of them are
not for free. You can try EMS SQL Manager http://www.sqlmanager.net/
which also has a free Lite version, or MS Web data Adminstrator at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en
Markus|||My experience has been that using EM/QA is MUCH faster if it is running on
the remote machine and I connect to the remote machine through the VPN
tunnel -rather than marshalling EM/QA through the VPN tunnel.
