Analysis Services 2000 + Reporting Services 2005 + Parameters

Hi All,

I'm trying to create reports in RS2005 using AS2000 as my data source. I understand that if I use RS2005 on AS2000, I wont be able to enjoy the OLAP based parameters as in using AS2005. Does anyone know an easy way to easily use Parameters in RS2005 while still using AS2000?

I don't think I've tried RS 2005 against AS 2000, but my best bet is that you create an OLE DB connection against your cube, and then learn how to write MDX.

You need to create MDX queries for the parameters that you want to get from your OLAP cube as well as the main query.

All parameterized queries need to be prefixed with =" and ended with ", and to be on one line. (Copy into notepad, turn off word wrap and make it stay on one single line.)

Analysis Service is slowing down the server

Hi,

I am facing the following problem on SQL2K.

When I start the service the server slows down and users start complaining that generation of reports based on system (i.e. databases) that are hosted on the same server have REALLY slowed down... and thus I have to stop the service...

Can some please guide me regarding how to solve this problem and how I can be able to use the Analysis service.

It would make sense to :

(1) Ensure the tables Analysis Services are querying have good indexes on them - use profiler & Index Tuner wizrd to check

(2) RUn the queries after hours to reduce competion on resources

(3) Check perfmon and see if the box is under powered for what you are trying to do

(4) Maybe find another server and copy the database to it & run analysis services on that - that way no-one will ever complain and it may be quicker for oyu.

Analysis server cube Performance through Excel 2007

Hello Everybody

I am accessing Analysis server cube -2005 through Excel 2007 for building reports. When ever i select a row or column right click and select Filter > Hide Selected Items, it will show "running query on the OLAP server" at bottom and will not respond after that.

Ran the MDX generated by Excel 2007 directly on analysis server, even then also it takes lot of time and finally it doesnt respond. I read in the forum that the sql generated by Excel 2007 is different. how can i tweak in so that cube performance improves ?

Hi Kiran,

Do you have old AS 2000 to compare performance? The reason I am asking this because you can check if you have same aggregation setup in AS 2005 cube. If you don't have old cube to compare try creating aggregation on AS 2005 cube. Also you can check profiler, performance counter etc.

An unexpected error occurred in Report Processing

Hi,

I am having MSRS 2000 Reports which is using subscription feature to email PDF format reports to user . I am able to get all the reports e-mailed as expected only this report is giving an errror in the status as "Failure sending mail: An unexpected error occurred in Report Processing". I can pull this report properly and also export it in PDF manually. The Report is a 15 page Report with few images. If I try to email only the link of the Report it works fine. Was wondering if anybody would have a clue about the same .

It sounds like you have the feature enabled where we store temporary snapshots in the filesystem. Check this article:

Make sure that the FileShareStorageLocation element is set to a path which actually exists. My guess is that it is not.

I have rs2005 installed. I created some reports through SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. I can preview reports fine in the studio. But after deploying it, on //localhost/reports, when I click the report, it takes a while to calculate and then give me error: "An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. "

The weird thing is if I restart report service, it will display report fine on the first time, then fail on the following attempts.

I hope so, since I am now getting it as well...

From what I can tell so far, it seems to only be happening for the reports that use the matrix output control.

Okay, so I don't know if this will help anyone else much except to let you know that the displayed error message (rsReportNotReady) and the errors reported in the log files were totally misleading and essentially useless in my case.

As it turned out, the problem was with one of my matrix cells being setup to navigate to another report and pass parameters based on the value of the associated matrix group.

Specifically, my result-set included a value that was an Oracle RAW(16) (i.e. a Guid) which in reporting services was treated as a byte[], which is all fine, except that trying to pass the byte[] as the parameter to the navigated report was causing the report to fail to render.

It doesn't make much sense to me, but it is 100% true since if I cast the RAW to a VARCHAR16 in the oracle proc then all is well. If anything, I would have expected to get an error when the cell was clicked and so the byte[] value was being passed as a parameter but no, the entire top-level report just failed to render with less-than-helpfull error messages...

It's a good thing I get paid by the hour ;-).

Has anyone ever resolved this? I am getting the same error, with a similar call stack, but intermitently - there are a number of reports for which it sometimes occurs and sometimes does not. I don't think it is the same problem as csrking's above, as some reports have navigation defined, some don't, and some have parameters but others don't.

It's happening on reports with both both SQL and SSAS data sources, if that makes any difference to anything.

I'm tearing my hair out over this!!

We found we were getting exactly the same message after upgrading to SQLServer 2005 for a report with one subreport which had previously worked fine in SQLServer 2000 version of Reporting Services. The problem was more confusing because other reports with subreports were still working OK.

Anyway, we then applied SP1 to the SQLServer server and to our client components on our developer PCs and this report would now render happily within VisualStudio 2005 but still did not render (and gave the same error message) in the report manager and/or on our intranet. What we had forgotten to do was update the ReportsServer server to SP1 as well. Once we did that (and we did no other change to either the environment or to the report design) suddenly all worked fine.

I hope this fix may help for all you other posters.

The SP1 actually does not solve the problem. At least not in my case. The original problem described here is this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917070There is Post SP1 hotfix package for SQL2k5 as well as reporting services. It can found here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918222/. After installing hotfixes and rebooting my problem was solved.BolffX|||

i am getting a similar error here. we have SP1 and the 2153 hotfix installed, and occasionally when running a report we receive the following error message:

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details.

i can reproduce this error by running the report four or five times in succession.

The function that throws the exception only contains asserts about timeing afaik. The described KB solved a similar problem. Just try. If you experience the exception on an AMD multi processor x64, you have quite a hig chance . Please let me known results.

I have rs2005 installed. I created some reports through SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. I can preview reports fine in the studio. But after deploying it, on //localhost/reports, when I click the report, it takes a while to calculate and then give me error: "An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. "

The weird thing is if I restart report service, it will display report fine on the first time, then fail on the following attempts.

I hope so, since I am now getting it as well...

From what I can tell so far, it seems to only be happening for the reports that use the matrix output control.

Okay, so I don't know if this will help anyone else much except to let you know that the displayed error message (rsReportNotReady) and the errors reported in the log files were totally misleading and essentially useless in my case.

As it turned out, the problem was with one of my matrix cells being setup to navigate to another report and pass parameters based on the value of the associated matrix group.

Specifically, my result-set included a value that was an Oracle RAW(16) (i.e. a Guid) which in reporting services was treated as a byte[], which is all fine, except that trying to pass the byte[] as the parameter to the navigated report was causing the report to fail to render.

It doesn't make much sense to me, but it is 100% true since if I cast the RAW to a VARCHAR16 in the oracle proc then all is well. If anything, I would have expected to get an error when the cell was clicked and so the byte[] value was being passed as a parameter but no, the entire top-level report just failed to render with less-than-helpfull error messages...

It's a good thing I get paid by the hour ;-).

Has anyone ever resolved this? I am getting the same error, with a similar call stack, but intermitently - there are a number of reports for which it sometimes occurs and sometimes does not. I don't think it is the same problem as csrking's above, as some reports have navigation defined, some don't, and some have parameters but others don't.

It's happening on reports with both both SQL and SSAS data sources, if that makes any difference to anything.

I'm tearing my hair out over this!!

We found we were getting exactly the same message after upgrading to SQLServer 2005 for a report with one subreport which had previously worked fine in SQLServer 2000 version of Reporting Services. The problem was more confusing because other reports with subreports were still working OK.

Anyway, we then applied SP1 to the SQLServer server and to our client components on our developer PCs and this report would now render happily within VisualStudio 2005 but still did not render (and gave the same error message) in the report manager and/or on our intranet. What we had forgotten to do was update the ReportsServer server to SP1 as well. Once we did that (and we did no other change to either the environment or to the report design) suddenly all worked fine.

I hope this fix may help for all you other posters.

The SP1 actually does not solve the problem. At least not in my case. The original problem described here is this one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917070There is Post SP1 hotfix package for SQL2k5 as well as reporting services. It can found here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918222/. After installing hotfixes and rebooting my problem was solved.BolffX|||

i am getting a similar error here. we have SP1 and the 2153 hotfix installed, and occasionally when running a report we receive the following error message:

An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details.

i can reproduce this error by running the report four or five times in succession.

The function that throws the exception only contains asserts about timeing afaik. The described KB solved a similar problem. Just try. If you experience the exception on an AMD multi processor x64, you have quite a hig chance . Please let me known results.
