analysis services 2000 error "cannot access registry on server(servername) or you are not a

I recently had to reinstall AS2000. Since then , if i dont run the service under the local account i get a "could not access registry on (localserver) or analysis you are not part of Olap administrators group on this server" error.

I am in the sql server admins group, and the olap admins group, as is the service account I want to run AS2000 under. I have granted admin access explicitly to the Hikey_local_machine\ software\microsoft\olap server registry entries, to the service account and my account.

I have installed AS2000 SP3a and rebooted the machine. I am still stuck with the error. When i check the "actual permissions" of my account, and the service account to run the AS service under, they have full admin permission to the machine.

If i run it under "local System Account" it works, but i need to run it under the service account.

All google tells me is to install sp 3a, which i have done twice, to no avail.

Has anyone solved this bug, or do they know the reason for it?

Hello! If you have AS2000 on a separate server and the administration console on another workstation you can check that they have the same service pack installed.

I also know, from experience, that this problem problem can appear if the pasword for the service account have extended its time limit.

Any firewalls between workstations and the server?

Analysis Server - Incompatible repository

Hi,
We have been using MS Analysis Server with Axapta (a mid-range ERP from MS)
for quite some time. So long we were able to create/run cubes without any
problem.
But today all of a sudden we are getting the following error message -
...................................... .........
Error
Transferring cube(s)\<CUBE NAME>\Connecting to the OLAP ServerMethod
'Connect' in COM object of class '{B492C386-0195-11D2-89BA-00C04FB9898D}'
returned error code 0x80040034 (<unknown>) which means: Incompatible
repository.
...................................... .........
The thing is nothing has changed from Axapta end. So my query is this -
Is there anything on AS that could cause such error message? Can someone
let me know please.
TIA,

Hello,
To isolate the issue, you may try to check if the issue occurs on different
clients or you could use MDX sample application on server to test.
If it is client side issue, please refer to the following article to
troubleshoot the issue:
288890 PRB: Incompatible Repository Error Message Occurs After Installation
of
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=288890
If the issue persists, you may try to unregister the DSO dll's in the
following order:
msmddo80.dll
msmddo.dll
msmdlock.dll
msmdnet.dll
msmdint.dll
Then register the above Dll's in the reverse order, starting with
msmdint.dll.
If we confirm it is a server side issue, it is more like a database
corruption, you may try to archive the current database, and then restore a
known good one on AS server to test.

An update query

Hi,
I run a same update query in our two servers, which have the same
configuration and same database and indexes, one of them is returning the
result in 4 seconds, and the other one in 7 minutes. the only difference
between them is that the fast server has 512 MB and the other one has 256 MB
RAM. Why is it that much slow.
Thanks in advance,
Mathew

actually the 2 servers are not the same... probably they do not have the
same data too, and/or the same disk subsystem... perhaps the second is more
fragmented too, both at physical OS file status and at internal logical page
status..
and having the half of RAM does not help for sure.., this mean MSDE has
fewer available resources, that the runnig applications have more
contentions for resources with the SQL Services...
more paging at OS level will be needed by all applications... the whole
system can be involved...
BTW, the 2 results are very different indeed... but try cleaning up your
server... defrag it, both at OS level and database level..
try comparing the statistics output as well as the used plans...
lot of variables are involved...

An interesting idea...

Having no more experience than reading books online, here is an interesting idea I would like to run by you guys and you can let me know if it is feasible or tell me I need to put the crack pipe down... Smile

We are going to increase the number of disks in our SAN, and I was speaking with the SAN administrator and he mentioned the shuffling of logical drives to match the new space. He said he is going to have to go through quite a few combinations/permutations on figuring out the best configuration for what data goes on the old vs. new to get the optimal space.

Is this something that can be modeled out? I can write something that recursively figures it out, but why not explore fun ideas with tools that may be able to do it?

Thank you in advance,

John Hennesey

If you collect enough data you can easily build models to predict what best performance. You should include things like load, etc. You can likely start off by using the Analyze Key Influencers tool in the Data Mining Addins for Office 2007 to get a rough idea of what factors indicate the best configuration.

An error occurred while processing 'BackupMetadata' metadata for database

I have transferred a database from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 and now I am getting an error when I try to run backup. I get there error "An error occurred while processing 'BackupMetadata' metedata for datase ID..." Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this error?

whats there in the error log ? ? ?......also did you try to backup using T-SQL .......is the db accessible ? ? ? after you restored from SQL 2000......try running

dbcc checkdb........

|||

Below is the error log:

FailedSad-1073548784) Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [SURVIAC] TO DISK = N'C:\\DatabaseBackups\\DailyFull\\SURVIAC\\SURVIAC_backup_200707091051.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'SURVIAC_backup_20070709105151', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
" failed with the following error: "An error occurred while processing 'BackupMetadata' metadata for database id 13 file id 65537.
Inconsistent metadata has been encountered. The only possible backup operation is a tail-log backup using the WITH CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR or NO_TRUNCATE option.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The database is accessible and is being used. I ran checkdb and did not come up with anything. I haven't used T-SQL. I have only used enterprise manager and my maintenance plans.

|||

seems your db is corrupted i guess.........the error log states that metadata is inconsistent ........also it allows you to take transaction log backup by using the option WITH CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR ........you have the following options,

1.Try to backup the db with T-SQL or

2.Take a tran log backup with the above option

3.If you have any recent full backup just restore it somewhere and test if you can take backup on that restored db....coz i doubt your db is corrupted....

|||

It looks like you could be hitting a problem where you have damaged pages in the backup. The default behavior under 2005 is for the backup to fail if the checksum can't be verified.

To see if it is the maintenance plan or not, first try to backup the database using your own T-SQL and not the maintenance plan.

Also, run your DBCC CHECKDB using your own T-SQL, not a maintenance plan.

How long ago did you move this from 2000 to 2005? Did you run a checkdb after that migration? How did upgrade the database? Have you done any successful backups since upgrading the database to 2005?

An error has occurred on the computer running IIS

Hi, i was following the tutorial in SQL Mobile Books online "Creating a Mobile Application with SQL Server Mobile ", but when i try to run the application using the pocket PC 2003 emulator, the got the following error, "An error has occurred on the computer running IIS, Try restarting the IIS server.", any idea why?

Check to see if the IIS URL is missing double quotes in your application. Compare with an example in Books Online.

Thank you!

|||

thanks for your reply Syed..

I have checked the IIS URL and it has double quotes. one thing my application is different from the tutorial sample is, on the tutorial

repl.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityType.NTAuthentication;

but in my application,

repl.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityType.DBAuthentication;

repl.PublisherLogin = @."sa";

repl.PublisherPassword = @."<admin1234admin>";

repl.Publication = @."SQLMobile";

repl.Subscriber = @."SQLMobile";

repl.SubscriberConnectionString = @."Data Source='" + filename + "';Password='';Max Database Size='128';Default Lock Escalation ='100';";

because i am using SQL Server Authentication rather than DBAuthentication used in the sample. would this have made the impact?

|||

Check to see if Pocket IE on the emulator is able to browse the IIS URL. Also you may want to generate a server agent log on IIS as described in

SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Books Online topic :"Enabling Logging by Using SQL Server Mobile Server Agent."

Thank you!

Hi Syed,

I followed the tutorial, couldn't connect to IIS URL from the emulator. I am testing this on my standalone PC with local IIS. Can you suggest me what needs to be checked.

|||How are you connecting to the IIS machine, are you using anonymous authentication or basic/integrated authentication.|||

hi , Udaya

This error happens when the device is not able to get conne ted with the IIS. Before running the program just open IE and try browsing some websites. If that is ok , try entering the SQL CE Server agent URL .

If you are using the RDA tutorial , the link will be something like :

http://121.247.150.xxx/yourvirtuladirectory/sqlcesa30.dll

If your IIS is configured properly you can see a simple webpage with a text message

SQL Server Mobile Server Agent 3.0 .

|||

Hi Every Body

I have been having a tough time with Configuring IIS.

Me Using My Local Machine.

- I have Tried Using Anonyous Acess.

- Tried to user the IUSR_[MAchineName]

Hi ,

Do not worry , U cam correct it!!

In fact u do not have to stick to all the steps in e book.

Regarding IIS configuration u can perfiorm many other steps.

If I start explaining , it may take many pages. The best thing u can do in this regard is watch this video.

Thank you!

thanks for your reply Syed..

I have checked the IIS URL and it has double quotes. one thing my application is different from the tutorial sample is, on the tutorial

repl.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityType.NTAuthentication;

but in my application,

repl.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityType.DBAuthentication;

repl.PublisherLogin = @."sa";

repl.PublisherPassword = @."<admin1234admin>";

repl.Publication = @."SQLMobile";

repl.Subscriber = @."SQLMobile";

repl.SubscriberConnectionString = @."Data Source='" + filename + "';Password='';Max Database Size='128';Default Lock Escalation ='100';";

because i am using SQL Server Authentication rather than DBAuthentication used in the sample. would this have made the impact?

|||

Check to see if Pocket IE on the emulator is able to browse the IIS URL. Also you may want to generate a server agent log on IIS as described in

SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition Books Online topic :"Enabling Logging by Using SQL Server Mobile Server Agent."

An appropriate use of MSDE

We have a project where 16 PCs will be used to run wildlife models.
Can we install MSDE on each PC and use it as a backend to the model?
Do CALs need to be puchased? I'm more than a little confused after
scanning the Microsoft web site.
Thanks
Yes, you can use MSDE on all your PC's with no CAL's. If this is a new
project, you might want to look at SQL Express instead.

Am I right in using BI Studio to run Reporting Services ?

Hi,

This is a basic question but I'd be grateful for any suggestions because I just can't get started.

I installed Reporting Services from a CD-ROM.

When I go to all Programs, I find an entry for BI Development Studio but when I run it, it describes itself as Visual Studio on the top left.

I can create basic Reports OK, but when I try to create Charts, following Brian Larson's book, I find myself looking for things that sound basic, but I can't find them. An example is Report Designer, whereas I have a Report Wizard.

Then I can find a 'Chart' under Report Items, but I can't find out what to do with it - I tried dragging-and-dropping it, double-clicking it and so on, but nothing worked.

I am sure I am doing something basic wrong but I can't figure out what it is.

I'd appreciate any advice !

Barry

.

The BI Studio has full support of all RS features. You may need to re-read the steps |||

Thanks for your advice and for responding so quickly.

I was impressed by your web site so I'll take your advice seriously !!! ;)

I was trying to skip the basics using my previous knowledge (which turned out not to be so portable after all) so I guess I'll start again at page 1.

They always "forget" the datasource. I can run it on my local machine but

BryanYou could try the following :
Go to the Report project properties by right clicking on
your Report Project in the IDE and selecting properties.
Out here set OverRideDataSource property to true. Then try
to deploy the reports.

Alternative to Account Delegation?

Hello,
I want to run distributed queries via a linked server using a windows
autheniticated login. Talking with our AD/network admin about the steps in
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...>
ity_2gmm.asp
they have a problem with setting up account delegation for service account
and sql server computer, mainly because this is a new precedent and they
don't want to go there unless absolutely necessary.
Are there any alternatives to doing the above that would enable distributed
queries using windows authenicated logins?
Thanks,
DanHi
No. The way the OS has to impersonate and delegate security across machine
boundaries requires this. If there was an easier way, we would all be using
it.
Your admins will need to get used to it. As security gets tightened inside
the OS, you will need to use it more and more.
